Five Things to Consider when Hiring a Wedding Photographer

So, you need to hire a wedding photographer; many newly engaged couples are faced with a whirlwind of options when it comes to planning their wedding. To make life a little simpler, I’ve compiled this list of five things to consider when hiring a wedding photographer:
1. Have a set budget in mind. Some photographers will have set hourly prices available on their websites while others may list packages. While researching, it is important to keep in mind that many wedding photographers are willing to work with you on a custom quote. Having a set budget allows you to work with the photographer to create a quote that will work for both of you.

2. Read reviews. When a client has an especially good, or bad, experience, they’ll write about it. It’s important to take the time to read these reviews so you can begin to understand the wedding photographer you’re researching. Usually, you can find reviews on multiple platforms such as Google, Facebook, Thumbtack, and My Wedding.com.

3. Take time to review their portfolio. Photography is an art, and these artists take the time to go through all of their work, spanning their entire career, and narrow it down to what they feel is the very best representation of them. By taking the time to go through their work, you can gain a better understanding of their style and perspective to make sure it is what you’re looking for. Also, don’t just check their wedding galleries; be sure to review their other galleries to really gain a feel for their work.

4. Ask them how long they have been covering weddings. Knowing their wedding history will make it easier for you to make an informed decision. Do you want a photographer that has only done a few weddings, or one that is more experienced? Keep in mind, the wedding photographer with the greatest experience may also be more expensive.

5. Ask if they are familiar with your venue. Even if a photographer is unfamiliar with your venue, they will likely visit it long before your wedding to acquaint themselves with the property. However, it is a plus if they have worked the venue before as they will likely have sample shots to show you as well as more knowledge of great photo spots.

By keeping these five simple things in mind, you will be a more educated shopper and find the perfect match for your wedding day. Also, many wedding photographers will gladly meet with you in person to discuss any questions you may have; this is a great opportunity to feel them out and make sure they are someone you want to share your special day with.
